VPN is an abrogation of Virtual Private Network. VPN is a networking technology that allows to create secure connection (i.e. encrypted connections) to another network over lightly secure internet network. It can be used to access region based restricted websites, shield user browsing activity from praying eyes on public Wi-Fi or Li-Fi network etc.
What is VPN ( Virtual Private Network):
In short the definition of Virtual Private Network (VPN), “A VPN is a way of creating a secure connection to and from a network or computer.”

“A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization’s network.”
Basically, VPN is designed to provide a secure, encrypted subway to transmit the data between remote offices (or individual users) and the organization network. The benefit of exchanging information between the two location via encrypted subway data cannot be read by anyone else (except authenticated user) because the system contains several elements to secure both the company’s private network and the outside network through which the remote user connect through.
Virtual private network uses encryption and other security mechanisms to ensure that only authorized users are able to participate in the communications and that the data cannot be intercepted. The aim of VPN is to avoid an expensive system of privately owned or leased private lines that can be used by only one organization or individual company. The goal of a virtual private network is to provide a secure network to an organization with the same capabilities, but the cost must be lower.

The use of a public network (usually the Internet) to connect securely to a private network is the basis of a VPN. Multinational companies and organizations will use a VPN to communicate confidentiality over a public network. This network is able to send voice, video or text formatted data. It is an excellent option for remote workers and organizations with global offices and partners to share data in private manner.

When a user connects their computer (or another device, such as a laptop, smartphone or tablet) to a virtual private network, the computer acts as if it’s on the same local network as the VPN. All the network traffic is sent over a secure (encrypted) connection to the VPN. Because user computer behaves as if it’s on the network this authenticated user to securely access local network resources even when user is on the other side of the world (remote location). User will also be able to use the Internet as if he/she were present at the VPN’s location, which has some benefits if you’re using public Wi-Fi or want to access geo-blocked websites.

When user browses the web while connected to a VPN, user computer contacts the website through the encrypted VPN connection. The VPN forwards the request for user and forward the response from the website back through the secure connection established by the VPN in between user and public network.
How VPN works:
Virtual Private Network work by a concept of Virtualization. Mainly in virtualization a host device will have a hypervisor installed in it which allows all authenticated users for the secure access of a public network to virtual private servers according to a configuration.
To connecting a device to a VPN users have to follows following steps;
- In Window, press window key, type Virtual Private Network or VPN.
- Click the setup a virtual private network (VPN) connection options. (If user uses the Window 8, you’ll have to click the setting category after searching.)
- Use the wizard to enter the address and login credentials of the VPN service you want to use.
- After this configuration user can then connect to and disconnect form VPNs using the network icon in the system tray (similar as the Wi-Fi network connected).

Thus we can say that, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) provide secure and advanced connections through a non-secure network by providing data privacy. Private data is secure in a public environment. Remote access VPNs provides a common environment where many different sources such as intermediaries, clients and off-site employees can access information via web browsers or email. Many companies supply their own VPN connections via the Internet. Through their ISPs, remote users running VPN client software are assured private access in a publicly shared environment. By using analog, ISDN, DSL, cable technology, dial and mobile IP; VPNs are implemented over extensive shared infrastructures. Email, database and office applications use these secure remote VPN connections.
VPNs have been used for years, but they have become more robust only in recent years. They are more affordable and also much faster.
